Incineration at high temperatures means lots of potential for energy recovery. The resultant flue gasses need to be cooled before being treated and provide an excellent means of raising steam. 

The Heliex GenSet is an ideal solution for waste incinerators because: 

  • It utilises steam that would otherwise be wasted
  • Saturated steam can be used; it doesn't have to be superheated 
  • It can accept the varying steam loads resulting from waste products
  • As the demand varies, any steam not required for export for additional revenue will be used on site for electrical generation

A leading healthcare waste services provider will benefit from annual electricity savings of around £120,000 thanks to the integration of a Heliex GenSet, allowing them to utilise the heat from their furnace gasses that would otherwise be wasted.

Client 
Our client, a forward thinking, high energy user, operates a number of sites across the UK where medical waste is incinerated at temperatures of as high as 1000°C.

Project 
Looking to exploit the energy from the heat in the furnace gasses, our client explored a number of options that would allow them to generate their own power on site, resulting in reduced energy bills and less reliance on electricity from the grid.

The Solution 
A Heliex HP 204 GenSet was incorporated into the sites existing process for cooling the incineration furnace gasses. A heat exchanger is used to absorb the heat from the furnace gasses to heat water, which is turned into steam. This steam goes through the Heliex System, where it generates electricity, before being condensed to water and then returned to the heat exchanger to start the process again.

The system is expected to generate 1,352MWh per year, resulting in a payback of just over 2 years.

Second Heliex GenSet installation for UK’s leading medical waste services provider at its newly relocated and entirely self-sufficient waste -to -energy facility in the south west of England.

The client 

Our client, a forward thinking high energy user, operates a number of sites across the UK where medical waste is incinerated at temperatures as high as 1000°C. The company has already installed a Heliex System at one of its Northern England plants.

The project

It was a priority that the new plant embrace innovative power generation technologies, enabling it to utilise any onsite waste heat to meet the full electricity demand. Various technologies were explored to create a state of the art system that entirely meets its energy needs.

The solution 

A Heliex HP 204 Steam Expander System was incorporated into the sites process for cooling the incineration furnace gasses. A heat exchanger is used to absorb the heat from the furnace gasses to heat water, which is turned into steam. This steam goes through the Heliex System, where it generates electricity, before being condensed to water and then returned to the heat exchanger to start the process again. The system is expected to generate 1600 MWh.

Return on the Heliex system is approximately 2 years
